Deployment of the Multinational Mission of Support to Security (MMSS) in Haiti Gains Clarity

The deployment of the Multinational Mission of Support to Security (MMSS) in Haiti is becoming increasingly tangible. This Monday, Inspector General Japhet N. Koome of the Kenyan Police announced that the mission will be led by Assistant Inspector General Godfrey Otunga, marking a significant step forward in international efforts to stabilize the security situation in Haiti.

The Kenyan government has clarified the leadership structure for the MMSS. While Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service (APS), Noor Gabow, was initially expected to lead the multinational force and even conducted a reconnaissance mission in Haiti last May, it is now Assistant Inspector General Godfrey Otunga who will head the MMSS. Noor Gabow will instead serve as the coordinator of the mission from Nairobi, ensuring streamlined communication and support from the Kenyan capital.

Kenyan authorities have also appointed Commissioner Stephen Chebet as head of operations of the general services unit for the force, adding another layer of experienced leadership to the mission.

President William Ruto is set to present the first team of MMSS agents this Monday at the Administration Police (AP) campus in Embakasi, as reported by Kenyan media. The team, comprising about 400 agents, is prepared to leave Nairobi at any time, pending final arrangements. This initial deployment will set the stage for subsequent phases of the mission, aimed at restoring stability and enhancing security in Haiti.
