Joint Press Conference: Prime Minister Garry Conille and Kenyan Ambassador Monica Juma Address Security in Haiti

Prime Minister Garry Conille and Kenyan Ambassador Monica Juma held a joint press conference today after a contingent of 400 police officers landed this Tuesday in the Haitian capital. The event marked a pivotal moment in the collaboration between Haiti and Kenya as both nations work towards restoring peace and stability to Haiti.

Prime Minister Conille began the conference by expressing his satisfaction with the deployment of the mission aimed at stabilizing Haiti. He highlighted the importance of cooperation among all sectors of society, emphasizing that collective efforts are crucial for restoring peace and security. "The deployment of the mission is a step in the right direction," Conille stated. "We must work together across all sectors to ensure that peace and security are restored in our country."

Addressing the pressing issue of armed groups, PM Conille made a direct appeal to the bandits. "I urge you to lay down your arms and recognize the authority of the State before any other provision is considered," he said. This statement came in response to a question about the call for dialogue initiated by the notorious gang leader known as Barbecue. Conille's message was clear: the path to peace begins with the disarmament and acknowledgment of state authority by these groups.

Ambassador Monica Juma, representing the Kenyan delegation, echoed PM Conille's sentiments and called for the support of the Haitian population in the mission's efforts. "We need the Haitian people to stand with us and support this mission," Juma said. "Your cooperation is essential for achieving lasting peace and security."

In a significant boost to these efforts, a contingent of 400 Kenyan police officers landed this Tuesday in Port-au-Prince. More officers are expected to arrive in the next few weeks, reinforcing the mission's capability to address the security challenges in Haiti.

As the mission progresses, the international community will be closely monitoring the developments in Haiti. The statements made by PM Conille and Ambassador Juma reflect a hopeful step towards resolving the security issues and building a brighter future for the nation. In a statement on his X account, American President Joe Biden said, "The future of Haiti depends on a return to democratic governance. While these objectives cannot be achieved overnight, this mission (MMSS) offers the best opportunity to achieve them."
